A Giltwood Barometer

A very impressive carved giltwood barometer by a noted London maker in partnership with other skilled trades.
The case has side leaf carvings with a shell carving below and an inverted shell at the top holding a spray of flowers, the case is carved from a single piece of wood and gilded.
In the centre is the 12 inch silvered dial with magnificent engraving of the pressure markings and a central design of concentric circles with arrow decoration from which erupt 32 elongated triangles all engraved with different designs.
The dial also has the makers name Crosta, Cetta, Gobbi & Co. with the address 34 St. Johns Lane, Smithfield, London. The pointer is of blue steel with a brass set hand controlled by a bone set knob below. Above the main dial is an 8.5 inch mercury thermometer with silvered Fahrenheit scale in a giltwood box. The dial is held within a cast brass bezel with silvered sight ring.
D. Gobbi is listed in Holborn 1810 – 1830 then in Smithfield, Crosta & Co. were carvers and gilders and Cetta was a mirror maker who may have silvered the dials. These fine tradesmen clearly co-operated in the production of this exceptional Barometer.

A mercury barometer in a mahogany case, the front veneered with fiddle grained mahogany and decorated with floral and conche shell inlays.The 7 inch silvered dial is calibrated in inches of mercury and is engraved with the makers name Malacrida No.237 Holborn – London with blued steel pointer.The dial is seen within the cast brass bezel, the glass has a central knob for the brass set hand,
