          A George III Bracket Clock

          A fine Georgian ebonised fruitwood case with locking front and back doors both with break arch glasses and with silk backed brass frets beside the arches. The inverted bell top has a brass carrying handle. The side inspection glasses have a concave top with circular silk backed sound frets above.  The clock stands on pad feet.

          The break arch brass dial has a six & a half inch silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markers, there is a silvered strike/silent dial in the arch with the maker’s name  Wm. Smith - London  The matt dial centre has an aperture for the pendulum beat indicator and an aperture below for the calendar dial. The spandrels are Rococo style C & W no.31, with matching spandrels in the arch.  The hands are fretted blue steel of serpentine design.

          The twin fusee movement has five turned and ringed pillars, verge escapement with knife edge bearing for the bob pendulum. The star wheel and rack strike sounds the hours on an alto bell. The back plate is finely engraved with sweeping floral designs, rosettes and whorls. This clock is 21” high (with handle) 11” wide and 7” deep.

          There were many clockmaking families with the name Smith recorded from the 17th century and several William Smiths in the 18th century. The clock and case follow the London style of 1760 – 1780 and it is probable therefore  that this clock was made by William Smith of Cheapside London; his working dates are listed as 1759 -1780.

          A George IV Bracket Clock

          The classic arch top mahogany case has a flame mahogany inset panel on the front with boxwood edging.There are silk backed brass fish scale sound frets at the sides and a brass carrying handle at the top. The clock stands on 4 turned brass feet with a repeat pull under.There is a locking arched glazed door at the back and a locking brass bezel at the front enclosing the convex metal painted dial with Roman numerals.

          The dial is signed  PHILP– Brighton and is held within a brass frame, there is a Strike/Silent lever at the top. The blue steel spade hands have decorative cut circles.

          The twin fusee movement has anchor escapement with star wheel and rack strike sounding the hours on a tenor bell with repeat mechanism. The back plate has engraved decorative borders.There is a holdfast clip to hold  the pendulum in place when moving the clock.

          Robert James Philp is recorded  working in Brighton circa 1828.The clock is18” high, 11” wide and 6.5” deep.

          A Sussex Bracket Clock

          A fine mahogany bracket timepiece with brass and ebonised inlays on the front panels. The sides have arched brass fishscale sound frets with silk backing and brass carrying handles.  The clock stands on brass ball feet.

           The  6 inch convex painted iron dial has Roman  numerals and is signed Solomon,  Lewes.  The hands are blued steel moon pattern.

           The eight day single fusee movement has anchor  escapement and pendulum with top rating nut. Circa 1850

          A George III Bracket Clock

          A very fine mahogany case of Lancet shape with a delicately patterned brass overlay on the front and a brass band round the base. The locking brass bezel is fitted with convex glass.

          The sides have brass lancet shaped sound grilles with silk backing and the carrying handles are brass lions masque design.  The glazed and locking back door is also of lancet shape. The clock stands on ball feet of solid brass.

          The 6.5” convex painted dial has Roman numerals and polished brass spade hands.

          The 8 day double fusee movement has lancet shape plates and five turned pillars, the back plate has an engraved border and features a strike (S) no strike (N) lever. the front plate has the Handley and Moore logo with crown. The movement has an anchor escapement and rackstrike with star wheel sounding the hours on a gentle bell. The pendulum bob also has an engraved border and there is a pendulum holdfast device.

          Handley & Moore were highly respected makers who worked in London 1802 – 1824.  This clock circa 1810 and the dimensions are Height 16", Width  9.5" and Depth 6".

          A Mahogany Bracket Clock

          A fine architectural case with Gothic inspiration, the front with flame mahogany panel within a brass frame, the sides have silk backed sound frets and brass carrying handles with floral sheath motifs.There is a brass bezel with lock anda glazed locking back door.There are pyramidic side finials and carved trims leading up to the carved acorn fiial on top.

          The 7" painted dial has Roman numerals and signed Newsom-Tottenham. There are blue steel moon hands.

          The 8 day double fusee movement has anchor escapement and rack strike with a star wheel sounding the hours on a bell with a repeat pull under. The clock is 19" high, 10.5" wide and 6.5" deep.

          Thomas Newsom is recorded working in London circa 1800. He also made Turret clocks.

          A French Bracket Clock

          A mahogany bracket clock of balloon shape with decorative satin wood inlay and gilt carrying handles. The clock stands on bracket feet with gilt trim. The tapered finial is topped with a gilt casting.

          The gilt brass bezel surrounds the 5.5" enamel dial with Roman numerals and blue steel hands.
