An Oval Repeating Carriage Clock

An exceptionally fine oval carriage clock with alarm and repeat functions from this superb maker. The oval gilded case is a rare and individual design, the ormolu is engraved throughout with a design of leaves and flowers framing the shaped bevelled glass panels and with an oval bevelled glass top inspection panel.
The white enamel dial has Roman numerals and blue steel moon hands. The subsidiary alarm dial below has Arabic numerals. The dials are set within a fine ormolu mask with engraved floral decoration.
The clock stands on a heavy engraved ormolu base and has a Rococco style engraved carrying handle. There is a leather carrying case.
The 8 day movement has an 11 jewel lever platform escapement and a star wheel repeating strike sounding the hours and half hours on a gong. The backplate has the Drocourt logo with D - C on either side of a carriage clock in an oval panel. The serial number marking is 9350, circa 1870. The clock stands 6” high with handle.

Miniature Carriage Clock
by Drocourt, Paris
Smaller than a normal miniature carriage this exquisite timepiece is by that supreme maker of French carriage clocks Drocourt.
The case is silver framed with canted sides and corners and with tortoiseshell panels on the front, sides, top and bottom. It is only 2.5” high.The 1” enamel dial has Arabic numerals and is inscribed Albert Barker – London. There are blue steel spade hands and the dial is set within a silver frame with sight ring.
The 8 day movement has it’s original 11 jewel lever escapement platform. The backplate is engraved ‘MADE IN FRANCE EXPRESSLY FOR ALBERT BARKER. It also has the famous oval Drocourt logo D – C on either side of a carriage clock.The serial number is 28675.
Pierre and Alfred Drocourt started making carriage clocks in St Nicolas d’Aliermont later moving to Paris where they were listed from 1860 – 1889 with exhibitions in Besancon, Paris and London, they achieved many medals for excellence including gold in1889. Charles Alix in his definitive book on French carriage clocks describes Drocourt as a superb Maker. This timepiece is c.1870
