doors with
break arch inserts, the front with silk backed brass
frets above the arch.
The inverted bell top has a brass carrying handle and

sides have inspection glasses with circular upper lights
all within cast brass
frames. The clock stands on cast brass feet. The break
arch dial has a six & a half inch silvered chapter ring
with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markers,
there is a silvered strike/silent dial in the arch. The
matt dial centre has a silvered plaque with the makers
name Robt. Thorne London, there is an aperture below for
the silvered calendar ring and an aperture above for the

Rococo style C & W no.35, the spandrels in the arch are
also Rococo. The hands are fretted blue steel of
serpentine design. There is a silvered plaque, now on
the back door, reading as follows: Mr and Mrs A.S.V.
Williams from members and subscribers The Eridge Hunt in
appreciation of their invaluable services 1939 - 1947
The five pillar twin fusee movement now has anchor
escapement, the original verge escapement was replaced,
probably in the 19th century, as the anchor escapement
was considered more reliable and gave better
timekeeping. The star wheel and rack strike sounds the
hours on an alto bell with a repeat pull facility.
The backplate has fine floral engraving incorporating
Tudor rose and coronet designs. The brass pendulum bob
also has a Tudor rose engraving and the stability
brackets are shaped and polished. The clock measures 18
height, 11 width and 7 depth.
Robert Thorne was a much respected watch and clock maker
working in London between 1754 and 1770. There is a
pair-case repeating watch by him
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and a watch
by him in the Dennison Collection.
