A GEORGE III BRACKET CLOCK
with verge movement by William Smith - London


A fine Georgian ebonised fruitwood case with locking front and back doors both with break arch glasses and with silk backed brass frets beside the arches. The inverted bell top has a brass carrying handle. The side inspection glasses have a concave top with circular silk backed sound frets above. The clock stands on pad feet.The break arch brass dial has a six & a half inch silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markers, there is a silvered strike/silent dial in the arch with the maker’s name Wm. Smith - London. The matt dial centre has an aperture for the pendulum beat indicator and an aperture below for the calendar dial.
. The spandrels are Rococo style C & W no.31, with matching spandrels
in the arch. The hands are fretted blue steel of serpentine design. The twin fusee movement has five turned and ringed pillars, verge escapement with knife edge bearing for the bob pendulum. The star wheel and rack strike sounds the hours on an alto bell. The back plate is finely engraved with sweeping floral designs, rosettes and whorls. This clock is 21” high (with handle) 11” wide and 7” deep. There were many clockmaking families with the name Smith recorded from the 17th century and several William Smiths in the 18th century. The clock and case follow the London style of 1760 – 1780 and it is probable therefore that this clock was made by William Smith of Cheapside London; his working dates are listed as 1759 -1780.

GEORGE III BRACKET CLOCK

A very fine mahogany case of Lancet shape with a delicately patterned brass overlay on the front and a brass band round the base. The locking brass bezel is fitted with convex glass. The sides have brass lancet shaped sound grilles with silk backing and the carrying handles are brass lions masque design. The glazed and locking back door is also of lancet shape. The clock stands on ball feet of solid brass. The 6.5” convex painted dial has Roman numerals and polished brass spade hands. The 8 day double fusee movement has lancet shape plates and five turned pillars, the back plate has an  engraved border and features a strike (S) no strike (N) lever. the front plate has the Handley and Moore logo  with crown. The movement has an anchor escapement and rack strike with star wheel sounding the hours on a gentle bell. The pendulum bob also has an engraved border and there is a pendulum holdfast device. Handley & Moore were highly respected makers who worked in London 1802 – 1824. Height 40cms. Width 24 cms. Depth 15cms.

QUARTER REPEATING BRACKET CLOCK

A rare 17th century clock from the heart of the Inns of Court. The ebonised case has locking front and back doors and side windows with a cushion top and gilt brass Eagle & Dolphin carrying handle. The cushion top has silk backed pierced repousse gilt decorative sound frets depicting animals and birds hidden in foliage. There are four gilt brass corner finials and a repousse escutcheon on the door. The clock stands on four cast gilt brass claw feet. There is a silk repeat pull cord. The 7” gilt dial has a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours, the inner ring with quarter and half hour gradations. The outer minute ring has 5 minute Arabic markings. The ring is signed Wm. Garfoot, Midel Temple.  The dial centre ia finely matted and there are beautifully cast Angel corner spandrels. The blue steel hands are finely fretted and pierced. The single fusee movement has verge escapement and the pull wind repeat mechanism sounds the quarters on two bells and the hours on a single bell. There are five turned, ringed and latched pillars and the back plate and the verge cock are finely engraved with a tulip design. The movement has fixing screws under and the dial has half disc retainers

William Garfoot worked in the Middle Temple and no doubt supplied the Barristers with their clocks and watches. He was working prior to 1678 and was Free of the Clockmakers Company 1680-1701. He was also noted  as a maker of verge watches.

MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK

A fine architectural case with Gothic inspiration, the front with flame mahogany panel within a brass frame, the sides have silk backed brass sound frets and brass carrying rings with floral sheath motifs. There is a brass bezel with lock and convex glass and a locking glazed back door. There are pyramidic side finials and carved trim on the roof with a carved acorn top finial. The 7" painted dial has Roman numerals and is signedNewsom Tottenham. There are blue steel moon hands. The 8 day double fusee movement has anchor escapement and rack strike with star wheel sounding the hours on a bell with a repeat pull under. The plates have cut out shoulders and five pillars. The back plate is nicely engraved Newsom Tottenham.  He is recorded as working in London circa 1800.

FINE MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK
A fine mahogany bracket timepiece with brass and ebonised inlays to the front panels and carrying handles and silk backed brass fishscale arched frets on the sides, the clock stands on brass ball feet.  The 15cm convex painted dial has roman numerals and is signed Solomon, Lewes with blue steel moon hands.  The 8 day single fusee movement has anchor escapement and pendulum with top rating nut.   Height 35cms. width 23cms. Depth 16cms.

BALLOON SHAPED BRACKET CLOCK
A mahogany bracket clock of balloon shape with decorative satinwood inlay and gilt carrying handles.  The clock stands on bracket feet with gilt trim.  The tapered finial is topped with a gilt casting.  The gilt brass bezel surrounds the 5 1/2" enamel dial with Roman numerals and blue steel hands.  The 8 day French movement has anchor escapement with Brocot suspension and countwheel strike sounding on a bell.  The pendulum has a heavy pear shaped bob.  The backplate has a logo for E. Bernard, Paris and Japy Freres imprest.  Height 58cms Width 28cms Depth 19cms.
