A RARE DROP DIAL CLOCK
by Edward Hird of Ambleside

This remarkable clock has some very unusual features that lifts it way above the normal drop dial. The heavily built oak case has rosewood graining and marquetry inlay panels on the front and on the curved trap door, there are finely carved side pieces with acorns and oak leaves and side doors with silk backed sound frets. The 11” painted dial has Roman numerals and is signed E.HIRD AND SONS – AMBLESIDE. The spade hands are blue steel and the cast brass bezel has Ό” bevelled glass. The massive chain driven double fusee movement has five turned pillars and features a dead beat escapement with Harrisons maintaining power, it is regulated by an 18” brass bobbed pendulum.  The rack strike sounds the hours on a bass gong. Altogether an extraordinary clock no doubt made for an important customer in Ambleside, the heart of the beautiful Lake District area.Edward Hird is listed in Ambleside from 1858, he was working with his sons circa 1879.

 A SMALL VERGE WALL CLOCK
by Richard Laurence - Bath

A Georgian wall timepiece by this renowned maker. The overall diameter of the turned mahogany surround is only 12” with a brass bezel enclosing the silvered dial. This 7.5” dial has Roman hour numerals and Arabic 5 minute markers, there is a subsidiary silvered dial with a regulating lever, it also contains an aperture for the false pendulum bob. The dial is finely engraved Richard Laurence – Bath. The blue steel hands are fretted and pierced. The rebuilt mahogany box has a locking trap door under. The 8 day fusee movement has A shaped plates with 4 turned and ringed pillars, the verge drives through a crutch and a suspended pendulum as favoured by this maker; the suspension spring is fixed to a beam moved up or down by an eccentric wheel connected to the regulator lever. Richard Laurence was born in Warminster in 1729, he moved to Bath and set up a flourishing clock and watch making business. He was also very much part of the lively social scene in Bath at that period. He became a Sheriff in 1770. He died in 1773.

 A MAHOGANY WALL CLOCK

An excellent dial timepiece in a well patinated mahogany surround, the overall diameter is 14.5” The mahogany box has a side door and trap door in the curved base. The painted dial has very clear Roman numerals and is signed D. Roberts – Bath. The blued steel spade hands ensure the time is easily read from a distance. The well made movement has four turned pillars and a chain driven fusee. There is a recoil anchor escapement.  c. 1880

A FINE DROP DIAL
by BROCKBANK AND ATKINS - LONDON

The unusual mahogany case has an 18” octagonal surround with concave curves between the solstices. The drop has a flame mahogany front with shaped viewing window in a brass surround, there are brass line and octagonal disc inlays. There are well carved side decorations and a side door; there is a locking trap door in the curved base. The overall height is
59 cms. The 11” silvered dial has Roman numerals and is engraved BROCKBANK AND ATKINS – LONDON. There are blue steel spade hands and a heavy cast brass bezel with beveled glass. The double fusee movement has turned pillars and anchor escapement, the rack strike sounds the hours on a mellow bell. The backplate is also engraved - BROCKBANK AND ATKINS – LONDON. The partnership of Brockbank and Atkins worked
in London 1815 – 1835. This clock c.1820.

 A RARE WALL CLOCK
A remarkable wall timepiece made by Wales and McCulloch, London The case has a fine 17” turned surround of polished Cuban mahogany and the 11” dial is also made of mahogany with applied gilt/brass Roman numerals with gilt/brass minute markers.The dial has the makers name WALES & McCULLOCH – 56 CHEAPSIDE depicted in gold lettering. The gilt/brass hands are fretted and decorated. The cast brass bezel has a patination matching the surround. The mahogany box has a side door and locking trap door on the curved base. There is a brass ’Patent Applied For’ lozenge on the case. The 8 day single fusee chain driven movement has rectangular plates with turned pillars and is supported on brackets attached to the surround with stabilizing screws at the top. The anchor escapement is controlled by a pendulum with a double sided brass bob. The innovative partnership of Wales & McCulloch were working in Cheapside, London from 1863 – 1881. c.1870

CARTEL CLOCK
A fine cartel clock with well cast gilt/brass case decorated with swags of vine fruits with a beautiful female masque below the drum clock case and with an urn above and cone finials on the shoulders and urn.  The sides and front have silk backed sound frets.  The convex enamel dial has blue Roman numerals with black minutes and is singed Gardry, Paris with gilt/brass decorative hands within a bezel with convex glass.  The castings are marked ACARRE.  Overall height 62cms.  The 8 day movement has anchor escapement with Brocot adjuster and countwheel strike sounding hours and half hours on a bell.  The backplate has the A.D. Mougin 'deux medailles' monogram dating from the latter half of the 19th century.
