EBONISED TABLE CLOCK
by Thomas Landifield - London

An imposing Georgian table clock in an ebonised case with a bell top and brass carrying handle. The square front door with lock incorporates the round convex glass in a cast brass bezel. The ribbon twist brass casting on either side highlights the front of the clock. The case has full length inspection glasses at the sides and has a glazed back door with lock. There are 4 cast brass flambeau finials on the top corners and the clock stands on 4 cast brass bracket feet. There is a repeat pull cord under. The 8” round convex ceramic dial is set in an inner brass bezel, it is very rare to find a ceramic dial in an English table clock and this dial is up to half an inch thick, it has Roman hour numerals, Arabic 5minute markers and is is signed Thos. Landifield London with the lettering of the ‘London’ very elegantly scrolled. There are blue steel heart hands. The ejght day double fusee movement has anchor escapement and a rack strike with star wheel sounding the hours on an alto bell.  The repeat pull sounds the last hour.  The rectangular plates have five turned pillars, the back plate is decorated with floral designs which extend to the side fixing brackets and the pendulum suspension bracket. The top rated pendulum also has a similarly engraved pendulum bob. The movement is held firmly in place by the seating platform, the side brackets and by the close fitting dial and dial plate within the inner bezel.  Thomas Landifield worked in London c.1770 and was free of the Clockmakers Company in 1772, it is recorded that he retired in 1777. He was also noted as a watchmaker.
