An imposing walnut case, the rectangular trunk door with
fine figured walnut mirrored veneers and cross banding
with an inner cross banding of tulip wood, the door lock
has a brass escutcheon. . The plinth also has superb
mirrored figured veneers at the front and stands on an
apron skirting. The break arch hood has magnificent
cross cut mouldings and a break arch door with
integral pillars and giltwood pillar caps. The break
arch dial has an 11” silvered chapter ring with Roman
hour numerals and inner quarter and Fleur-de-Lys half
hour markings, the outer minute circle has Arabic five
minute markers and the dial is signed Thomas Pierce New
Romney in Kent. There is a silvered seconds ring and a
silvered Strike/Silent ring in the arch. The matt dial
centre has a date aperture for the silvered date. The
gilt spandrels are C&W no. 22 and the dolphin spandrels
in the arch are C&W no. 38. The hands are pierced and
fretted blue steel. The eight day movement has anchor
escapement and rack strike sounding the hours on an alto
bell. The pendulum has a brass rod and double brass
faced bob, there are lead weights and phosphor bronze
lines. Clocks by Thomas Pierce are extremely rare, he
was not a prolific maker preferring quality to quantity.
He is listed by Brian Loomes as working in New Romney in
the late 18th century.
