BRONZE & ORMOLU
MANTEL CLOCK

An exceptionally fine mantel clock, the ormolu case with
well cast applied ormolu decorations of shells, flowers
and leaves. The front is inset with superb Petra Dura
white marble depicting a butter-fly and there are
triangular coloured insets above the bezel.The clock
sides also have Petra Dura panels of white marble inset
with geometric patterns of coloured marble. Also on the
sides are symbolic emblems cast onto the ormolu. The
exquisitely crafted dial has a rouge marble chapter ring
and green marble centre separated with a circle of cream
marble, the Roman numerals are painted onto the chapter
ring The fretted ormolu hands are Trefoil pattern. The
dial is protected by a twist off ormolu bezel with ball
rim. Above the case is a bronze socle with a beautifully
cast bronze bust of a young maiden with floral drapes on
her head and shoulders, the bronze is engraved MARIN and
the monogram A.D can also be found. The eight day
movement has Brocot escapement and pendulum suspension
adjustment. The countwheel strike sounds the hours and
half hours on an alto bell. The round back plate has a
Vincenti & Cie
Medaille d’Argent imprest and the A.D monogram.
The clock stands 460mm high, 230mm wide and 150mm deep
at the widest point. Vincenti & Cie were the successors
to M. Vincenti, a Corsican who set up a factory in 1822
at Montbeliard for the manufacture of clock movements
for which he was awarded the Silver Medal at the 1824
Paris Exhibition. This clock is therefore post 1824.The
A.D marks on the clock, case and bronze are the
monograms of the casemaker. Joseph Charles Marin (1759 –
1834) was a Rococo sculptor who worked in Paris and has
works on display in the Louvre museum.
