A SUSSEX GRANDMOTHER
by William Berridge - Oxford

A grandmother clock of remarkably compact size, it standsonly 5ft. 6.5 inches high. The well patinated oak case has a break arch trunk door finely cut to show the medullary rays and fitted with a lock and key. The oak plinth stands on an apron skirting. The break arch hood has a glazed door and fluted side pillars with brass pillar caps. The 8” break arch brass dial has a silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic 5 minute markers.The dial centre is engraved with floral swirls and is signed W. Berridge – Oxon.
The gilded spandrels are Angel pattern ( C&W No.3 ) There is a silvered plaque in the arch engraved with a fantasy creature flying to the sun with gilded arch spandrels either side. There are blued steel serpentine hands. The 30 hour movement is chain driven and has an anchor escapement. There is an outside disc countwheel strike which sounds the hours on a tenor bell. William Berridge was recorded working in London in the late 18th century. This early 19th century clock may indicate that he moved to Oxford or it may be by his son.
