 A GEORGIAN BRACKET CLOCK

A fine dark fruitwood case with locking front and back doors with
break arch inserts, the front with silk backed brass frets above the arch.
The inverted bell top has a brass carrying handle and four brass finials. The
sides have inspection glasses with circular upper lights all within cast brass
frames. The clock stands on cast brass feet. The break arch dial has a six & a half inch silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markers, there is a silvered strike/silent dial in the arch. The matt dial centre has a silvered plaque with the maker’s name Robt. Thorne London, there is an aperture below for the silvered calendar ring and an aperture above for the silvered pendulum beat indicator. The spandrels are Rococo style C & W no.35, the spandrels in the arch are also Rococo. The hands are fretted blue steel of serpentine design. There is a silvered plaque, now on the back door, reading as follows: Mr and Mrs A.S.V. Williams from members and subscribers The Eridge Hunt in appreciation of their invaluable services 1939 - 1947 The five pillar twin fusee movement now has anchor escapement, the original verge escapement was replaced, probably in the 19th century, as the anchor escapement was considered more reliable and gave better timekeeping. The star wheel and rack strike sounds the hours on an alto bell with a repeat pull facility.  The backplate has fine floral engraving incorporating Tudor rose and coronet designs. The brass pendulum bob also has a Tudor rose engraving and the stability brackets are shaped and polished. The clock measures 18” height, 11” width and 7” depth.
Robert Thorne was a much respected watch and clock maker working in London between 1754 and 1770. There is a pair-case repeating watch by him
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and a watch by him in the Dennison Collection.
