 A SMALL VERGE WALL CLOCK
by Richard Laurence - Bath

A Georgian wall timepiece by this renowned maker. The overall diameter of the turned mahogany surround is only 12” with a brass bezel enclosing the silvered dial. This 7.5” dial has Roman hour numerals and Arabic 5 minute markers, there is a subsidiary silvered dial with a regulating lever, it also contains an aperture for the false pendulum bob. The dial is finely engraved Richard Laurence – Bath. The blue steel hands are fretted and pierced. The rebuilt mahogany box has a locking trap door under. The 8 day fusee movement has A shaped plates with 4 turned and ringed pillars, the verge drives through a crutch and a suspended pendulum as favoured by this maker; the suspension spring is fixed to a beam moved up or down by an eccentric wheel connected to the regulator lever. Richard Laurence was born in Warminster in 1729, he moved to Bath and set up a flourishing clock and watch making business. He was also very much part of the lively social scene in Bath at that period. He became a Sheriff in 1770. He died in 1773.
