A RARE DROP
DIAL CLOCK
by Edward Hird of Ambleside
This remarkable clock has some very unusual features
that lifts it way above the normal drop dial. The
heavily built oak case has rosewood graining and
marquetry inlay panels on the front and on the curved
trap door, there are finely carved side pieces with
acorns and oak leaves and side doors with silk backed
sound frets. The 11” painted dial has Roman numerals and
is signed E.HIRD AND SONS – AMBLESIDE. The spade hands
are blue steel and the cast brass bezel has ¼” bevelled
glass. The massive chain driven double fusee movement
has five turned pillars and features a dead beat
escapement with Harrisons maintaining power, it is
regulated by an 18” brass bobbed pendulum. The
rack strike sounds the hours on a bass gong. Altogether
an extraordinary clock no doubt made for an important
customer in Ambleside, the heart of the beautiful Lake
District area.Edward Hird is listed in Ambleside from
1858, he was working with his sons circa 1879.
