A very decorative Dresden case with burgundy and green background decorated with floral designs and highlighted in gold. The front panel has a rural scene depicting a courting couple with sheep and a dog; the side and back panels have bird and floral designs. The matching porcelain base also has floral panels. The machine engraved silvered dial has Roman numerals and blue steel moon hands. The 8 day movement has anchor escapement with a silk suspension and a countwheel strike sounding the hours and half hours on a bell. The backplate has the imprint of Henry Marc – Paris.

BRACKET CLOCKS

A fine Georgian ebonised fruitwood case with locking front and back doors both with break arch glasses and with silk backed brass frets beside the arches. The inverted bell top has a brass carrying handle. The side inspection glasses have a concave top with circular silk backed sound frets above. The clock stands on pad feet.The break arch brass dial has a six & a half inch silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute markers, there is a silvered strike/silent dial in the arch with the maker’s name Wm. Smith - London. The matt dial centre has an aperture for the pendulum beat indicator and an aperture below for the calendar dial.
. The spandrels are Rococo style C & W no.31, with matching spandrels
in the arch. The hands are fretted blue steel of serpentine design. The twin fusee movement has five turned and ringed pillars, verge escapement with knife edge bearing for the bob pendulum. The star wheel and rack strike sounds the hours on an alto bell. The back plate is finely engraved with sweeping floral designs, rosettes and whorls. This clock is 21” high (with handle) 11” wide and 7” deep. There were many clockmaking families with the name Smith recorded from the 17th century and several William Smiths in the 18th century. The clock and case follow the London style of 1760 – 1780 and it is probable therefore that this clock was made by William Smith of Cheapside London; his working dates are listed as 1759 -1780.

LONGCASE  CLOCKS

A superb mahogany case of classic Scottish design with rounded hood on a tapering trunk. The trunk has canted front corners and a flame mahogany impost above the trunk door.The locking trunk door, with fancy key, is also tapered and has fine mahogany flame veneers and cross banding round the sides. The plinth also has fine veneers and cross banding on the front with a canted skirting sitting on pad feet. The rounded hood has carving under the door and a classic fret above. The locking door has an 18” turned mahogany surround with a giltwood sight ring. The 13” silvered dial has Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. It is signed JAs. RANKIN KILMARNOCK, the blue steel hands are split moon design. The well made 8 day plated movement has anchor escapement and rack strike sounding the hours on a genteel bell. The height of this clock is 206cms.
The Rankin (Ranken, Rankine) family were famous Scottish clockmakers. James and John worked in Edinburgh from about 1760 and their sons James and William are recorded in Kilmarnock. Sorn and Old Cumnock from the late 18th century with relatives in Greenock, Alnwick, Belfast, Oban and Philadelphia in the 19th century. This fine example is circa 1810.

An important one piece carriage clock by Leroy with alarm and repeat mechanism.  The gilded case is finely chased with floral motifs and has repeat button, full size top glass and swing handle.  The enamel dial has Roman numerals and subsidiary alarm dial and is signed Leroy a Paris.  the movement has the original 7 jewel level platform escapement with engraved balance cock..  The rack strike with starwheel sounds the hours and half hours on a bell with hour repeat facility.  Height 12.7cms.

WALLCLOCKS

This remarkable clock has some very unusual features that lifts it way above the normal drop dial. The heavily built oak case has rosewood graining and marquetry inlay panels on the front and on the curved trap door, there are finely carved side pieces with acorns and oak leaves and side doors with silk backed sound frets. The 11” painted dial has Roman numerals and is signed E.HIRD AND SONS – AMBLESIDE. The spade hands are blue steel and the cast brass bezel has Ό” bevelled glass. The massive chain driven double fusee movement has five turned pillars and features a dead beat escapement with Harrisons maintaining power, it is regulated by an 18” brass bobbed pendulum.  The rack strike sounds the hours on a bass gong. Altogether an extraordinary clock no doubt made for an important customer in Ambleside, the heart of the beautiful Lake District area.Edward Hird is listed in Ambleside from 1858, he was working with his sons circa 1879.

BAROMETERS

A mercury wheel barometer in a mahogany casewith ebony and boxwood stringing and with wheel and conche shell inlays.The architectural top is mounted with a brass finial. The 8” silvered dial is engraved with the maker’s name F. Aprile – Braintree and is set within a cast brass bezel. The pointer is fine blue steel and the set hand is of polished brass. F. Aprile is recorded working in Braintree from circa 1815.
