A Sitzendorf Mantel Clock
A very decorative porcelain case encrusted with flowers and with two cherubs at the sides, one holding a jug, the other a rose. The top is embellished with a massive bunch of flowers set on a pierced base.
The clock stands on four feet, each with a different flower and these in turn stand on a porcelain base with four floral feet. Both pieces of porcelain are clearly marked with the Sitzendorf double slash – cross logos.
These lovely clocks were usually fitted with 30 hour clockwork movements, these were often of poor quality and had to be replaced at intervals. Also of course it was a problem having to wind every day and it is miraculous that no real damage was caused by the constant handling throughout the life of this delicate piece. The answer nowadays is to fit a quality quartz movement, now fitted, which only occasionally needs a battery replacement.
The first Sitzendorf factory was set up in 1760 but later moved and expanded to other towns. In 1884 Sitzendorf began production of lace figurines and the decorative floral porcelain for which they are now so famous.
