          A Small Verge Wall Clock

          A Georgian wall timepiece by this renowned maker. The overall diameter of the turned mahogany surround is only 12” with a brass bezel enclosing the silvered dial.This 7.5” dial has Roman hour numerals and Arabic 5 minute markers, there is a subsidiary silvered dial with a regulating lever, it also contains an aperture for the false pendulum bob.The dial is finely engraved Richard Laurence – Bath. The blue steel hands are fretted and pierced.The rebuilt mahogany box has a locking trap door under.

          The 8 day fusee movement has A shaped plates with 4 turned and ringed pillars, the verge drives through a crutch and a suspended pendulum as favoured by this maker; the suspension spring is fixed to a beam moved up or down by an eccentric wheel connected to the regulator lever.

          Richard Laurence was born in Warminster in 1729, he moved to Bath and set up a flourishing clock and watch making business. He was also very much part of the lively social scene in Bath at that period. He became a Sheriff in 1770. He died in 1773.

          An Important Drop Dial Clock
          by Roskell, Liverpool and London

          An excellent mahogany drop dial clock, the shaped 19” surround is topped with a finely carved Fleur-de Lys. Below is a front panel with wave carving and side spiral carvings all with integral flowers.Below is a mahogany cushion with rare fiddle graining supported by an elegant tapered and carved base also with fiddle grain.There are silk backed sound frets on doors on both sides of the box and a lower door on the right for pendulum placement. The overall height is an impressive 36”.

          The 13” painted dial has Roman numerals with the central signature  ROSKELL dated 1777, Liverpool. The hands are pressed blue steel Spade pattern.
          The twin fusee movement is chain driven and has anchor escapement and star wheel rack strike sounding the hours on a treble bell. The heavy brass plates have shaped shoulders, cut out bases and five turned and ringed pillars. The front plate is imprinted 6884*

          Robert Roskell founded the company in 1777, he worked with O’Neill as a partner until 1798. Baillie lists Roskell as Liverpool and London and this explains his reson for using a superb London movement by Thwaites & Reed in this clock that was clearly made for an important client. The number 6884* indicates it was made in 1822. Robert and his son John continued up to 1830.

          A Swedish Cartel Clock

          An early 20th century Swedish cartel clock in a hand crafted giltwood case.
          The case is heavily carved with flowers and swags and there is an observation glass for the pendulum bob.

          The convex painted metal 6” dial is well patinated and has Arabic hours and 5 minute markers.  The gilt hands are beautifully fretted, pierced and stamped.

          The 8 day movement has anchor escapement and rack strike sounding the hours and half hours on a bell.

          The backplate has the Union Clock Company five star logo.
          The clock is 18” high and 10” wide

          A Mahogany Drop Dial
          Dial signed John Stanley, London

          A handsome drop dial in a Mahogany case with flame mahogany veneer on the drop. There are side doors on each side and a trap door under the drop.The 11” convex painted dial has bold Roman numerals and is signed *John Stanley - Londonand is contained within the opening brass bezel.There are blue steel fretted hands with Trefoil design.

          The single fusee movement has anchor escapement, rectangular plates and  four turned pillars.The overall height is 18” and the width of the turned mahogany surround is 14”                                                      *The movement is 19th Century.

          John Stanley was working in London ante 1725 and free of Clockmakers Company 1752-1756

          A Viennese Picture Clock
          also known as a Picture Frame Clock

          A Viennese picture clock in a giltwood frame with opening glazed door. The clock is 17” high, 14” wide. The interior also in giltwood contains the clock with an engine turned gilt brass bezel with intricate patterns. The whole is set in a high relief giltwood flame moulding. There is an aperture below the clock to display the Sun King brass pendulum bob and various other gilt reliefs which complete the interior picture.

          The dial has a 4” silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and an engine turned brass centre. There are blue steel moon hands. The well made 30 hour Vienna movement has square plates with 4 turned pillars, anchor escapement and silk suspension for the compound pendulum with the visible bob.

             The star wheel rack strike sounds the hours and half hours on a gentle bell. The mainsprings are contained in hanging barrels as sometimes found in Viennese clocks of this period.

             There is a similar clock in the Furtwangen Horological Museum dated 1820.

          A Sussex Drop Dial Clock

          A mahogany drop dial timepiece from this local maker.The turned mahogany surround is 17” in Diameter and holds the opening brass bezel and 12” painted dial. The drop has a glass inspection window in a brass frame displaying the brass pendulum bob.  There is a side door and a locking trap door in the curved base.

          The painted dial has Roman numerals and is signed J. STEDMAN – PETWORTH. There are blue steel spade hands.The single fusee movement has brass plates with turned pillars and an anchor escapement with 13” pendulum. The number 13490 is stamped on the backplate.

          During the 19th century the Stedman family of clockmakers were working around Sussex in Brighton, Steyning, Storrington and Midhurst as well as Petworth. They were all related to George Stedman who worked in Petworth 1828 – 1858.

           One of his sons James Walter Stedman 1870 – 1878 is the signatory of this dial. The number 13490 indicates that the movement was in fact made in 1864 by the famous London makers Thwaites and Reed who by the latter part of the19th century were supplying their excellent movements to many provincial clockmakers for use in their locally finished clocks.
